You don't know the true rhyme, or else you would let him.....
Peter, Peter, Pumpkin eater.
Had a wife, couldn't EAT her.
So he put her in a Pumpkin Shell, and there he ATE her very well....

Note that the aforementioned Mr. Pumpkin Eater "...had a wife and COULDN'T keep her...".
It wasn't until the DIVORCE was finalized that, as a result of the civil suit proceeds, that she WON the (also aforementioned) "Pumpkin Shell". It was here that Mrs. Pumpkin Eater was able to claim her piece in the divorce settlement; namely, the possession of the Pumpkin Eater family residence (i.e. the Pumpkin Shell). Hence, he "put her in a Pumpkin Shell, and there he kept her very well."
Case Closed.

In the good old days, a wife obeyed her husbands wishes. If he wanted her in a pumpkin shell, she went in a pumpkin shell. Or else she got a well-deserved beating.
