Ah there are sooo many reasons why they hate us.
We're arrogant.
We think we deserve better treatment than others.
We think we're smarter than others.
We don't appreciate our freedoms or our rights (like voting).
We keep telling everyone they can't have nukes but we do.
We keep electing idiots who tell others to go F*** themselves.
and the list goes on and on . . . .

Yes, we are hated by most other countries, but not cuz we're American, but because we are a world power that has the potential (many people THINK) to take over the world. I personally don't think we do, because one nation vs. the whole world (even with our technology) will result in the favor of the world. Every world power has to fall one day or the other, believe it or not. Just look at Rome! It was thriving! Now, it's just some dead empire that we read about in stupid books (I don't think so; i love studying about Rome).
Most Americans do have pride in themselves because we are very advanced, but they don't know how much other nations don't have. We take everything for granted and don't know the true meaning of appreciation. I, as an American, don't act like I can take over the world, because I can't. Neither can America. There will always be somebody in the world that will question our authority, and stand up to us. So no! We do not have the right to act and feel like that, though we can have appreciation for all that we have.
I personally think that humans are here to help each other, whether we're from America or India or Iraq or Kenya or wherever. With our technology we can help others.
We are hated by most countries, because they are jealous (hey, it's not their fault!) of our luxurious life style. Let's spread the love!

I read in a book an interesting theory as to why there is resentment for the United States among some groups. (I do not know how widespread the resentment is because it is the ones that hate us that get all the press. But really, how widespread is the resentment?)
Basically no matter what we do we will be resented because of jealousy. We are a successful nation, the richest nation, and basically the most free. (I suppose there can be arguments on this point, but at least that is what the perception is.) As long as we are on top in categories like that, people in other countries will be jealous. Of course they will come up with some other reason for acting on those jealousies, but the underlying cause remains the same.
I think there is at least some truth to this theory. Add to that some foreign policy mistakes, and you have a recipe for all kinds of actions against the U.S..

Most of the world is envious and jealous of our country for a myriad of reasons. Through manipulation of facts and a purposeful distortion of our aims and philosophy, our enemies have been able to influence world opinion against us. Taking a proactive stance against terrorism and our enemies, seems to bother the very countries that we have liberated in the past. Unfortunately they were not capable of defending themselves and still cannot. We on the other hand can and will, as long as the Democrats do not have their way. A lot of countries have become social welfare states and some in our country are striving to do that here. That form of government is failing worldwide, and because we are the leader in economics, technology, and have a strong military capability, they are bitter and jealous, which leads to hate and envy. Check your facts when you get responses from liberals who will claim that socialism is a better form of government. Look at the unemployment, taxes, economic opportunity, cost of living, and poor medical treatment available in socialistic countries. Many want us to abandon our very identity as an independent and sovereign nation to become part of the "global community". Why strive to lower our standards and way of living to become part of a system that historicaly is a failure. We are Americans and should be proud of that fact. We have contributed more in money and lost American lives to the rest of the world, in attempts and victories, in sustaining lives and bringing liberation and economic opportunities. We have exported knowledge, industrial & agriculture technology, products and our people to help others; and at times must take actions to protect and preserve our investments which are not only in materials but also in ideas that promote hope and freedom, eventually leading to a better economic and justful way of life for those that may never have that opportunity. I am sure you will get some answers from those that tell you how bad and evil we are. Do not listen to them, I saw first hand as a soldier in Vietnam how we can export hope and freedom and then see it all go to hell because some do not feel others deserve the chance at what we take for granted. When we left Vietnam over 2 million people died ( bet you didn't know that) but they really did not count because the liberals, socialists , and communists had their way. Yeah, war sucks and should be abolished, BUT guess what? It has been part of our human shortcomings for milleniums and unfortunately it is not going away any time soon. So given a choice of being strong and at times needfully agressive, or weak and not have the capability of defending ones self I choose the first and let those that hate me for it be damned.

First of all, we aren't as hated as the media likes to portray. The truth is that we are extraordinarily popular in countries in Africa and countries like Australia, Israel, and Russia. It is mainly fancy-pants liberals in Europe and Canada that so detest us.
Why?
I think it's a mix of no longer being a power-broker and disgust about American values--faith, family, freedom. They don't like the fact that we are now the sole super-power--once Holland, France, Spain, and Britain owned the seas and how they are playing second fiddle to America and they don't like it. But they also don't like how religious we are or how traditional we are. They scoff at our conservatism. They scoff at our capitalism which they find degrading (and Americans find liberating). The relationship between us and Europe is more like the older, snootier, but less successful cousin to a younger, adventursome, but conservative younger cousin. America is a little wet behind the ears but our soul, our values, and our ideas are in the right place.

I'm American, I don't want to take over the world. If I wanted to take over the world that would mean there would be more people hanging around my house. I don't want that!
