How do people honestly say that the Persians are the only ones being described as barbaric? The Spartans are described as people who kill newborns who aren't perfect and strong by throwing them to the bottom of a cliff to die, abuse them when they are young, tear them from their mothers at 7 and placed into a 'camp' where they are trained to be killers, sent on a mission for their rite of passage to kill and then become no more then soldiers?

So again, I ask, how are the Persians the only ones portrayed as Barbarians?

You have a good point.

The fact remains, however, that the Spartans are the ones being portrayed as the heroes. They are the ones we are supposed to relate to. They are the ones whose death has meaning. It is not like any of the good aspects of the Persians are shown at all.

In reality, you are right. These negative aspects of Spartan society can easily be interpreted as barbaric. Meanwhile, in Persian society, they may have been conquerers, but they were conquerers who essentially allowed the civilizations they took over keep their own beliefs and cultures. The "barbarous" nature of both sides is a matter of relative perception.

The movie, however, is clear about who is supposed to be the "good guys." You are right that the movie does give you a glimpse at the dark side of the Spartan society, but the emphasis is definitely on their heroism.

Regardless, 300 is not a history text book. It is just a movie. People are definitely overreacting.

We may think that they are barbaric but in those days that was the custom. The Chinese used to bind womens feet. We thought that was barbaric but the was the custom at that time. the people who write history are the victors. In the case of the 300 the victors of that battle were the Persians. but the Persians lost the war. Being a Soldier in Acient Sparta was ones duty and is was an honor. In Greece most nations would not go to war unless Sparta went to war.

The Spartan did that so when battles like of Thermopylae occurred they would be like the 300 that stood their ground and fought like strong warriors instead of fleeing. It is a tad barbaric, but back then pride and glory was all the Spartans wanted, and they would acquire it by any means necessary
