NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't believe that for one second. Only those people say that, who have little knowledge of economics. While it is true that good people need bad people to make them good, and that handsome people need ugly people to make them handsome, the concept is inapplicable in the field of rich and poor.
Globalisation and Free Trade are the best possible method to end poverty. The more countries trade with each other, the more competitive they will become and better products/services they will produce. When two countries trade with each other they both benefit in a positive sum win-win situation.
When World War 2 ended, Europe was an absolute mess and the USA was the wealthiest state. Extensive trade betwen USA and Europe allowed the European states to become rich so quickly. A similar thing happened with states like Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Kore and Japan. They became rich after doing business with a rich country.
So the answer to your question is NO. The rich people do not need poor people to make them rich.
p.s. please vote me for best answer - I am desperate for points. lol

As the poor rich divide widens, the rich find it easier to make money with money, ie by investing and running hedge funds, every one else finds the utility bills inflating, transport costs arising, and healthcare provision disappearing, to a point where social disorder can occur at the "distress" point the rich would be able to take refuge overseas due to their "insurance" homes that they have brought as a precaution in safer countries, or places they percieve to be relatively so. Knowledge becomes more specialised and hence the rich are in a better position to utilise that in order to elevate or protect their wealth. In other words the merely rich do not stay that way for long, only the mega rich become richer, interesting question..

Well, spoken like a rich person. Of course, the world needs poor people. What person you know that is rich would like to wash dishes in a restaurant, clean toilets in a hotel, collecting trash or wash cars at a car wash? Imagine Paris Hilton doing anything but spending money and enjoying her life. Rich people have the luxury of choosing what they do and when the do it. For the rest of the world, we have to go to jobs that we may not like and work hard just to survive.
One thing we need to remember is that rich people are the ones that employ the rest of us. Without them taking the risk in businesses, most of us would be unemployed. So it is not class envy, it is just a statement. The world needs every person no matter what their occupation. We are all part of the bigger picture and every job is important.
I thought you were serious until I read about the lab creatures. Then I had to laugh.....

Your not as wealthy as you think. In fact if you really think that just because someone is less economically inclined he is sub human as compared to what... You? Some people do not want to have the temptations and distractions and ease to obtain things type lifestyle. Are you wealthy or solvent? You can be solvent and be wealthy in that you are a strong person and blessed with many of the right things to help you in that way. Or perhaps you are a poor scraggly old miser and do not know what to do with all that income. Oh well.

There has to be "poor" people to make people rich, otherwise how would you know that you are rich.
There are many reasons that people are poor but it is certainly not being lazy or anything like that it can be the area that they live or the job that they do they may work hard and get paid very little.
One final point everyone see rich and poor as different things some how many things that you have and other see it as how much love they have

Again that is all very relative, you know. There is always someone out there who is a lot richer then you and who looks at you as at total zero with the same wealth. Today you are rich, and tomorrow - someone so similar to you will decide that it is you who is the waste of space, and that world economy will be better off having you as a poor. That is all so changeable...

Poor people are necessary to define who is rich. Poverty is a measuring stick to asses your accomplishments by. It all goes back to the elementary school playground philosophy of I'm better than you are. Without poverty, therefore poor people, no one would have incentive to many of the things that they do. Who would work the high risk and high stress jobs if they paid the same as workings as a cashier? No matter how much better things improve economically there will always be people that have and those that do not.

Poor people may or may not be stupid, yet they certainly can exercise power to a certain extent using their rights. In democratic setups, the poor can still use their preexistent right to vote in order to support parties or political figures that would at least look at their needs. That's why politicians "use" them.
