I visited Darwin last October. I was not impressed. It was the buildup for the wet, and it rained a bit. We found the local buses to be impossible to use. The people in the tourist industry were the least friedly I have ever encountered in Australia. We felt unsafe walking outside both in the early morning and early evening. There wre a lot of people around who looked a bit scruffy. and some that looked downright dangerous. We visited a number of shops, and found them to be neat and tidy, staff was polite, but stand-offish. We had a few items shipped back to the US, paid a hefty fee to assure they came by air, and when they arrived three months later, it was clear from the labeling that the shopkeeper saved around $50. in postage by sending them by sea. (In spite of our being charged for the air postage...) It was interesting to see some of the historical sites, and a dinner cruise on the harbour was worth the expense. I will never regret having been there once, but will not bother to go back in the future.
