please help. I have searched the Tinternet.
I have 2 computers with Wireless PCI cards installed. They are both hooked up to my broadband 2wire router.
They are both connected to the network 2WIRE265. :)
However I can not see any folders on each other computers? How can I find out my ip adress and do that ping thing?
I tried start - Run winipcfg but keep getting an error message. even when I disconnetc from internet.
I can access internet on one pc but the other one I can't?
When I click on my network places it is blank.
Do I have to setup a workgroup?
I even downloaded AnalogX Proxy to act as a server so I can use my 1 connection to access internet on both computers??
Hope you can help.

on pc 1.

click start- run- type cmd then hit return
at the prompt type ipconfig/all

you will see the ip address assigned to your pc- also note the gateway address

repeat this on pc 2

the gateway will be your ip address of the 2wire

on pc2- the one without internet

type ipconfig/renew at the command prompt if it is not getting an ip address.

if this does not work you might nees to uninstall the drivers for the wifi card or swap them to elimate a hardware fault.

once both wifi connectipns are happy on pc1

start-my computer- navigate to the file you want to share (not good practice to share all files)

right click on the folder you want to share and click the sharing tab

select the "i understand the risks....." then the just enable file sharing button

then click the share this folder on the network button and give it a name - eg photos on pc1

it is important that both machines are part of the same work group. the default in xp pro is "workgroup" but in xp home it is mshome!!!

to check/change

click start- control panel- system then the computer name tab. if it is not a member of the workgroup- workgroup then change it with the change button. also note the "full computer name"

do the above with both machines (workgroup and file shares)

now assuming the network is working you can verify thing by opening internet explorer

in the address bar type the following (substituting names accordingly)

\\pc1\photos on pc1

alternatively

open my computer and on the right hand side select add a network place, then in the wizzard click next then next then browse- entire network- microsoft windows network-workgroup. now you should see a list and choose the file you want. this will now be stored in my network places

done

other info

winipcfg does not work in xp use ipconfig from the command prompt instead

you don't need to use a proxy. the 2wire is the gateway

to ping click start- run type cmd then at command prompt type and ip address eg

ping 192.168.0.1 then press return

success will show four received packets.

if wifi on pc2 still will not work try plugging it into the 2wire with an ethernet cable (especially if you have a bt socket near it- the 2wire has four ethernet ports) ie move the 2wire to it

email me if you have any probs

ps firewalls might need permission to allow each other to access (xp built in firewall does not need to be changed)

also make sure that pc 2 is told in internet options-tools-connections to use network

goodluck

"However I can not see any folders on each other computers?"
Have you setup the folders to be allowed access from remote computers (sharing). Right click the folder properties - sharing.

"I can access internet on one pc but the other one I can't?"
The windows networking can be a real pain to setup. If the automatic network setup wizards don't do it for you try setting up the network IP's yourself. Its fiddly but sometimes the only way. If you do some searchs on the net you will find info on setting up a home network.

"How can I find out my ip adress and do that ping thing?"
Open up start - connect to - show all connections
Right click the network you created and click status the ip will be in their.

"Do I have to setup a workgroup?"
You should already have one all the machines must have the same workgroup name to be able to see each others folders. The workgroup name is listed in control panel - system.

"AnalogX Proxy"
Windows should be able to do it for you, I've had multiple machines connected up to one net connection no problems. As I said sometimes you need to do the ip addresses yourself because the automatic setup stuff tends to be finiky.

Your computer that has no internet needs to be connected to the 2WIRE265. You need to look at the detected networks in the non-connected computer and select the 2Wire265. That will get that computer internet access. You can then go through the process of setting up a true network. Hope this helps. If you have trouble, your 2Wire software can be used to detect the 2Wire265.

I very a lot doubt there'll ever be a finished wire-free community. we can at the moment get dramatically more advantageous speeds with stressed out than instantaneous, we can be a lot more advantageous particular about safe practices, and we can be a lot more advantageous valuable about availability. rigidity is extreme on RF frequency allocation - everybody needs some - radio amateurs, television, Radio, Radio administration modelers, police and different emergency amenities, deepest instantaneous operators, musicians, automobile distant keys - everybody needs a slice of the radio spectrum, and everybody needs more advantageous. to do lots of instantaneous will favor more advantageous spectrum allocation. in case you stay in a densely populated section now it should be puzzling to come across a free channel now to run the instantaneous. Then there are the promises with wires - if i opt to run a 10G link btween a server and a swap, i visit assert even if it really is accessible and be particular, it really is quite puzzling to be particular with aireless. With the convergence of each thing on a community, the demands are transforming into more advantageous. The undertaking i'm at the moment targeted on will be utilizing fibrechannel over ethernet. That needs a lossless swap fabrics - ie a packet is going in and we *be conscious of* it is going to arrive (or as close as makes no enormous difference) we gained't make such ensures over instantaneous. Then there is the elements. The must be so undesirable to electrify a stressed out link, it extremely is it does impact it, the effect upon the link is the least of our issues!
