If both computers have ethernet ports then connect a crossover ethernet cable between the computers.

Run the network setup wizard on both computers. You also might have to manually setup the IP addressing, Subnet Mask and folder sharing.

If I was you I would just go get a cheap router at your local computer store to handle all the IP addressing and connections for you. This would be fast and easiest on you if you have no networking experience. All you need is a cheap router and two ethernet cables.

yup sure can, that is what it is for.

if you are not using a router or a switch, and desire to conect the computers directly you will need a cross over cable. If you already have a home LAN they that part is done.

Both computers have to be on the same workgroup to "see" each other, and both (all) have to be set to share files and share printers (if you want to be able to use a printer from one computer to another that has a printer attached.

by far the simplest method if you don't already have a Wired LAN (Local Area Net) is to go the WiFi WLAN method, and no need to run cables.

XP has a network set up wizard that will do most if not all of the computer side of the work for you. That only leaves you with installing the unnecessary cards / cables / USB devices etc. And that is not difficult.

I have included reference pages to explain and help you through this, it is not that hard, read carefully and follow instructions. Good luck

Sure, just hook them up then make your hard drives shared. Then go to the computer you want the files to go to and use it to browse the other computers hard drive. Then just copy the files off of it.
