What's better in poor, well-draining soil: rosemary or tarragon? I'm looking for a companion for my lavender, and since lavender grows best in what seems like abusive conditions, I want to know what would be better planted with it.

If I were you, I'd go with the rosemary. It's a hardy plant, loves well-drained, sandy soil, and is often compared to lavender. Though tarragon is a great choice too, I've found rosemary is tougher. Also, since it's so like lavender, you can plant them together and not need to worry about the different little needs of both the plant species.
Good luck with your herbs!

I would like to see Rosemary with your Lavender, the two have very different scents and grow in a similar structure, I grow both of these for my job and I think they compliment each other in several ways.
