My 19 yr old was given a ticket for having alcohol in his vehicle in TN. Does he need a lawyer on his court dt

He has a job and is afraid of loosing his license for a yr. The law was changed in Jan 07 for minors with violations that involve alchohol. He has never been in trouble before and this has him terrified. I expect him to be punished, but I don't know what to expect.

A new drunk driving law that went into effect in January puts Tennessee on the map as one of the only states with a blanket “shaming law” on the books. The maximum punishment for any DUI conviction is 11 months and 29 days in jail, and a $10,000 fine. The state of Tennessee will take prior DUI convictions (as far back as ten years) into consideration when determining sentencing. The shame law only replaces the jail time. Usually when you lose your license, you are allowed to request a probationary license which give minimal driving privileges for the purpose of going to and from work.
