Yes, the show was live on the telly, Tommy fell down by the curtains and we just laughed thinking it was part of the act. Sadly it was not. He was a really funny guy and he was a great magician. getting it wrong was all part of the act as he would eventually get it right.

I have only ever seen it the once and that was on the Night that he died on the Live show, He keeled over rather slowly and the next thing we saw was an arm reaching through the Curtain and the Credits started to roll. I think a lot of people thought it was part of his act. I think he also attempted to communicate his distress to the assistant on stage but I think that she was totally unaware of Tommy reaching out to her briefly.

PS. If you Google Tommy Cooper you will find a link to the Biography channel and be able to view a clip of a tribute programme. It may not show the point at which he died but the full version may well show some of the footage of his last show!

A sad loss to Comedy!

Yes, I remember it well, it was on an ITV show called LIve From Her Majesty's hosted by Jimmy Tarbuck filmed at Her Majesty's Theatre (hence the name). Tommy had asked an assistant for a cape she put it on when suddenly he slumped then fell back and started making 'snoring' noises the audience laughed thinking it was part of his act, the show went to a commercial break after the show had finished an ITN newsflash came on to announce he had died. So sad he was a comedy genius

It was a live performance and I was watching it on tv when he collapsed. At first everyone laughed because they thought it was part of his act. But then the curtains closed around him and he was pulled inside and it went straight into a commercial break. Then we realised something was really wrong. it would be in very poor taste to show it again.

It was shown live as it actually happened!
Everyone thought he was mucking about and it was all part of the act. It wasn't until the following day we found out he'd died backstage.

If they did show it that would have to win first prize for the most tasteless show ever. It would take a sick mind to watch a man starting to have the heart attack that killed him and the audience laughing because they didn't realise.

It would be right up there with the movie of Saddam Hussein being hanged badly and the crocidile hunter swimming with manta rays.

I remember watching it happen.

His young lady assistant put a cloak around his shoulders and he simply collapsed. The curtains were closed and he was pulled through them. As many people have already mentioned, we all thought it was part of the act.

Straight after the program, the news announced his death.
