...for 3 computers to access it. Do I need the MAC addresses for them? If so, how do I know what they are?
And if I find an unauthorized MAC address accessing the router, how do I stop it?

To find the MAC addresses of your installed network cards:

Click start, run.
Type cmd

you will have a DOS box in front of you

Type:
IPCONFIG /ALL

look for ETHERNET adapter Local Area Connection ... this is the wired adapter's info
The MAC address is listed under Physical Address...

look for the Wireless adapter's info, also listed as "Physical Address"

OR ----

type getmac
if you have more than one card installed, it's a little more difficult to distinguish between them.

Notebooks typically have the MAC printed on a sticker on the underside; Retail boxed adapters you buy from a store typically have it printed on a small sticker on the box.

best luck,
Scott

I am assuming you are talking about a wireless router.

You could set up MAC address-specific permissions on the router to protect against unauthorized access. But it would be much easier to simply use WEP or WPA encryption.

This can be done rather easily by just reading the directions.

As long as you have DHCP enabled and you have not turned on any security features or filtering then it should be as easy as plugging the ethernet cables into your computers, unless you are trying to connect wirelessly the you need to install the wireless adapters on the computers or turn them on if they are built in.

It is best to connect one at a time so you can see were something goes wrong.

After you do finally get your computers connected thier MAC addresses will show up in the routers information screens. If you see more then the three you connected yourself then someone is using your connection also. Now is the time to secure your wireless router by enabling WEP or WAP. Follow the instructions in your user manual and everything should go smoothly.

If you have never done this before, it can get a bit confusing because theres so many different companies that make routers. I have a Motorola router, and called the 800 number and they walked me through the whole setup process, even how to set up wireless security.....this would probably be the best way for you to do this......
