1) is a metaphor because "valiant dust" is comparing dust to something that is courageous without using like or as in the comparison.
2) is a simile because it says "as water in a sieve" so it is comparing something to water in a sieve using like or as.

The first one is I believe a metaphor because in her idea of marriage she is comparing the male figure to a piece of dust
The second one is a similie because she is using "as" if she wouldn't have it would have been a metaphor
