I've gotten the impression that it's kind of social/style taboo to wear nylons with open toed shoes. Is that true, or did I just get that impression somewhere weird?

Absolutely not! I do it all the time and I'm a performer. No one has ever said anything to me. Just make sure those seam things on the end aren't sticking out - tuck them under your toes.

Don't worry about the "fashion police". Women used to wear open toed shoes with hose in the past. In the 60s "sandalfoot" hose was developed just for open toed shoes. Hose with open toed shoes is a nice option if you didn't have time for a nice pedicure or you have very pale skin.
Anyway, it is more important for you to do what you like; if you and your significant other like the way you dress, don't worry about anyone else.

I think that if you are trying to look elegant or you have really fancy open toed shoes its better not to wear nylons. I think it looks tacky. A women's toes should be pretty and polished, not covered up w/ nylons.

yes it is that's why they created nylons for open toed shoes that just have a loop for your toes and that way you don't show an ugly seam on your toes that ruins the look of your nice shoes.

I don't think so. I love funky style, so I don't follow a "rule book." If you like your nylons w/ your shoes, wear them together. Plus, you might just end up looking a little Vogue if you find polished pieces to go with it.

I'm fashion-backward myself, and I say do what feels good. I used to live in Colorado - sandals and socks was perfectly OK there, but I get laughed at back East doing it. I hate dealing with shoes, though, so I just do what I do.

Its not the nicest look I must admit, but you can buy nylons without seams on the toes - have a look around, and if you feel you must...... Jx

If you don't expect to be seen in them. Its fine.
If you have to look presentable all the time,it looks tacky .
