IrDA is transmitting by flashes of light and you need a line of sight between the two things making the communication. Bluetooth uses weak radio waves, and can transmit anywhere within about 30-50 feet of the receiver...including around walls.

IrDa is infrared (Infrared Data Association) and Bluetooth uses wireless transmission. Infrared is generally easier to setup and lets you transmit small files. Bluetooth is faster and in general is better for transmitting lots of stuff quickly. Bluetooth also has greater ranger than infrared.
