If the person is African American then that is the correct term to use.
If the person is Just African then you just call them African.

It's kind of hard to say. Not all African Americans are keen to being called that. My husband for instance rather be called black than African American. It's a tough call. It depends on the person.

If you are in the United States, it is African American. But if you are in the UK or something, it is just black. It's funny when Americans go to England and call black English people African Americans. lol

Please don't talk about people like items, which is all political correctness does. If you are going to describe someone, use an accurate reference, not one that's P.C.

If asked, most black people will describe themselves as "black".

VERY few will call themselves "African American".

Just a note to those of you who practise this junk. The only people offended by calling a black person "black", or require people to call indiands "Native Americans" are white people. That's right, the rest of the world could care less. In fact I'm 1/2 Native American, so as a "Native American" I officially give you all permission to call us indiands. Go for it, the only people you will possibly offend are liberalistic fools in Boston.

if you want to be a politically correct suck-up (or you are writing a paper for school) then yes, it is African American. But black people (catch that?) call themselves black and aren't offended if you call them black. My friends who happen to be colored say they are more offended when people call them African American. You can call them "colored" if you want. It sounds kinder, but both are acceptable.
Why is it that black people have 400 names for being black but whites only have white? (No one is afraid of hurting someone's feelings by calling them "white"...) The proper name for white people is caucasian, but aside from forms and paper work, where do you see that?
My point is that what you call different races in the USA shouldn't matter (unless it is a bad word)... We're all Americans and that's what counts.

They prefer their name.
"General term" if American American,if African African.
Or what ever country they are from.
i don't think the term African American endears you to them.
Ignore whatever they call each other cause they seem to have special license.

Black......In England, I have been told that is quite acceptable, and I might refer to some one as AFRO-CARIBBEAN, or Indian or Pakistani .... political correctness is making people frightened to open their mouths, I have no problems with being described as WHITE, even though I am slight pinky, yellowy colour, or has anyone got a problem with that, its nicer then being called a HONKY I suppose.
