"ENEMIES OF ZOYSIA:
"Weed killers, weed and feed products, grubs and lawn services. Beware, many commercial lawn services say they specialize in zoysia maintenance. If you have a lawn service, make sure they do not broadly apply weed killers of any sort. Spot weed treatment is preferred.

"Lawn service companies are in business to sell you services. Expensive services like aeration and de-thatching are not needed. Zoysia needs to be fertilized once every two months during its growing season, April, June and August."

"Healthy zoysia grass is aggressive and chokes out weeds naturally, without harsh chemicals. Broadly applied weed killers should never be used on Zoysia grass. Herbicides and Weed-and-Feed products actually slow the growth of zoysia making it weaker and more prone to weeds. Zoysia grass is also virtually pest and disease resistant."

Now mind you that I found that information on a site that sells Zoysia, so take it with a grain of salt. However, the concept is a sound one: Improve the quality of your lawn, and it will choke out the weeds on it's own.

Round-Up and Finale are the most effective (non-selective) herbicides that I know of. I would use one of these in combination with a pre-emergent herbicide (in the fall) such as Gallery. And then I'd choose selective herbicides to spot treat.

"As Alan Savory points out in _Holistic Resource Management_, herbicides treat the symptom, not the problem. Cultural modification can be cheaper and more effective in the long-run, but herbicides offer a quick fix and dramatic results." (http://www.rain.org/~sals/weeds.html)... The most effective defense against weeds in a lawn is to keep that lawn healthy and full.

Happy Yardening!
