I just installed a gig of RAM to my Windows laptop because everytime I started up a game or something a big blue screen would come up and restart the computer and acoording to Microsoft and Compaq this is RAM overdrive or something and it is caused when your computer dosnt have enough RAM,so I installed the RAM and to be sure it worked out correctly I went to my computer and clicked properties and the RAM did show up but when I started a game the same thing happened. So I was wondering if after you install RAM if you have to chang some settings?

They obviously didn't diagnose it correctly. If the memory shows correctly, it's likely working properly.

Right click on My Computer and select PROPERTIES. Choose the ADVANCED tab and then click SETTINGS in the STARTUP and RECOVERY box. In the SYSTEM FAILURE box uncheck Automatically Restart. Click OK in the remaining windows.

Duplicate the error and when you get the "Blue Screen" you will be able to read it. Write down the error and restart your computer. Go to http://support.microsoft.com and do a search for STOP ERROR + "number from your error". This should help you get headed in the right direction of resolving this.

Good luck!

What happened is that Microsoft and Compaq gave you an incorrect solution to your problem.

There are no settings you have to change once you install new memory.

If you still have the old memory installed on the computer, I would suggest removing it and trying it with just the new memory to see if that solves the problem.

If not, I would suggest you repost the question with more details. What brand and model number laptop are you using? What games and applications does this blue screen happen on? What does the blue screen say?

If you are sure your ram is the right speed and density, you might have to upgrade your video card (not too easy in a laptop).
Check your bios to see if you have your ram timing set correctly. It should be set to auto or controlled by spd.
They might have overlooked the settings when they added the new ram and it might be set to the old ram.

Did you buy the correct RAM? There are mostly DDR2 RAM sticks, at different speeds, like 533 and 667 Mhz. Make sure your game has the same requirements.

Good Luck!

Some computers mainly laptops/notebooks share thier available ram with the video processor. And some have seperate video cards with thier own ram onboard. So,Check to see if you are sharing that ram with the vid card. Or does your vid card have enough ram on it to support the game.

That sounds like a load of crap but I'm not sure. As far as I know, you shouldnt have to change any settings or anything after installing RAM. Its quite an inigma.

maybe it could be your video card? or maybe it could be a virus or any 3rd party programs that is causing this...it doesn't necessarily have to be RAM problem

It could also be your Video adapter.
