I have Internet explorer -version pre 7.0. I am not seeing Security Symbol (lock) on secure web pages.?

Question

I have a version of IE prior to 7.0. I upgraded to 7.0 then reversed to the prior version. Reputable web sites that say they are secure do not display the Secure Symbol (Lock) at bottom or anywhere. I am afraid to use these pages to transmit sensitive credit information. My question is--is the symbol somewhere that I can access it? Is there any other way for me to verify the security of the page besides seeing the symbol?

if it starts https and not http
it is secure
