My computer states that the my connection speed is 100Mbps, but when I connect my laptop it only connects at 46Mbps. Is there anyway I can get my desktop and laptops to be faster. I am using a Wireless 2.4 gig router. I am connecting through a Cable modem, and I know the speeds are faster then that. Can someone help. Thanks.

It looks like there are two things going on. First some info.

Wired networks connect at 10/100/1000MB/s, depending on the NIC cards and routers speed cababilities.

Wireless networks maximum speeds are:
802.11b - up to 11Mb/s
802.11a - up to 54Mb/s or when using propriety speedboost technology up to 100Mb/s
802.11g - up to 54Mb/s or when using propriety speedboost technology up to 100Mb/s
802.11n (Pre Draft) - faster then 802.11g, but not as fast as 802.11n Draft Standard
802.11n IDraft) - Up to 200Mb/s

Remember those are connection speeds not actual throgh puts.

It sounds like you have the desktop wired to your router (100Mb/s) and your laptop wireless (46Mb/s). If you move the laptop closer the signal will get stronger and your connection speed will climb to a max of 54Mb/s.

Well yes you are correct. You connect to your local network at 100Mbps if you are using eithernet. If you use wireless it will be slower depending on whether you are running 802.11b or 802,11g.

These are all LOCAL SPEED not internet speeds.
Most internet connections, even broadband, are under 3 Mbps some with cable are 5 or 10 but NONE are anywhere near 100. So both your laptop and your desktop can access the web at more than enough speed.

Remember your router DIVIDES your local area network and the Wide Area Network (or internet).

All you see on your machines connector is the Local info.

If you want to see what you internet speed is you need to use some bandwidth speed tests off the web to find out.

Wireless cards transmit speeds are about 2x slower than wired. You can check this out in Task Manager: Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Click networking. You will see "Local Area Connection" and something like "Wireless Connection". Your local area connection is your ethernet port, which depends on your Network Card for internet speed. If you have a 10/100 Speed card, then your speed will be at most 100Mbps. So it depends on wired, or wireless.

Good Luck!

the fee at which your community function relies upon on the community units you employ and what form of community you are going to create.....a LAN or a WAN...etc. while you're speaking a pair of WAN then it truthfully relies upon on the form of provider you get out of your ISP.
