I am 34w. Because of my age (near 36) and false positive results I received on my AFP test, I have been seeing a specialist (peri-natal-tologist) since early in my second trimester. He did a a sono on me at about 31w -- and the sono revealed that she (the baby) is growing normally and at a good weight (about 3 pounds 9 ounces).

I saw my regular OB two weeks later (at 33w) for my routine visit - and he measured my belly. He remarked that my belly is small -- measuring at what is average for a woman who is only 30 weeks pregnant.

If the baby is a good size but my stomach is small -- does that mean she will run out of room more quickly and I could deliver earlier than my due date??

I feel her jabbing in my ribs at the same time I am feeling cramping in my pelvis. So, I kind of think she is taking up the entire space in there.

Can you offer any insight?? Am I jumping to inappropriate conclusions??

Thank you!!!

Measuring fundal height is VERY inexact. No you probably will not deliver early, you'd be surprised how much bigger you'll get in the next 6 weeks :) Relax and enjoy!

First off, Your belly will grow and expand along with your child. That's why women get stretch marks - your stomach stretches to accomodate. If your baby is intended to grow, it will, and no amounts of skin and flesh around it will stop them.

I personally had low weight gain, and at 7 months pregnant I had only put on 7 pounds, and I had to have an ultrasound to make sure the baby was okay. The baby, at 27 weeks, was just fine - she seemed to weigh close to 3 pounds at the time and was perfectly proportioned.

I stopped worrying that much and by the end of my pregnancy I totaled a 20 to 25 pound weight gain after all; the 7th, 8th and 9th month (the 3rd trimester) were when I gained most of my weight.

My baby was born totally average at 7 lb 7.4 oz and 20 inches long!

I wouldn't fret; if your obgyn becomes worried about fetal growth, etc he'll direct you for another ultrasound. Meanwhile, make sure you're gaining weight and keep being safe and healthy.

If the peri has been seeing you regularly, he or she will have a good idea of the growth pattern your baby is following. My ob won't even tell women exactly how their stomach is measuring because it can often be off a bit based on your body type. The cramping sounds like Braxton-Hicks (practice contractions) and it is very normal for feel her in your ribs at this stage. My son was only 19 inches when he was born, but he had been getting a knee lodged under by ribcage for weeks! If your doctors feel that your baby is growing well, focus on that and try not to worry (although that is really difficult!!).

Relax and enjoy!!! God has been doing this for a long time. Measuring your belly is a very inexact indication of the health of the pregnancy. I would trust the specialist, since that's why you're seeing him anyway, right?
