The main characters are the Marquis De Sade, the Priest who runs the asylum and Maddy who is a girl that works there. The Marquis is a historical figure, he was an atheist and a hedonist. He wrote several lewd books including "101 days in Sodom". The Priest is a good man but his world view is too narrow and his naivety ruins him in the end. Maddy is a nice girl who finds the Marquis exciting and likes his books, she pays a heavy price for this friendship in the end.

The above answers are all right....but no-one's mentioned that the Maquis de Sade's philosophy and writings gave the English language the word 'sadism'.......
