If the snorer could stop, he would. Nobody goes to bed at night and thinks, "Aha, I'll snore tonight and make everybody else in the house lose sleep -- what fun"! And since snoring takes place during mouth breathing, plugging the nostrils will make it worse.
If snoring is really loud and disruptive, chances are good that it is caused by a condition called sleep apnea, which MUST be taken seriously. Untreated sleep apnea not only stresses both the snorer and everyone else in the house who can't get a good night's sleep, it can also lead to heart malfunction and death!
Apnea is easily treated with the use of a night-breathing aid called a CPAP. You must see a sleep doctor before you can get one, as they have to be individually adjusted, but most insurance covers the cost. CPAP eliminates snoring 100% and keeps the heart from being damaged. Surgery is very rarely used to treat apnea, as the success rate is not that good.
Please ask your husband's doctor to refer him to a sleep doctor or sleep clinic ASAP. These facilities often have a long waiting list, and procrastinating can really damage his health. Do it right away.

my husband snores awfully i sent him to the docs and they confirmed that he suffered with a condition called sleep apnoea which can cause bad snoring you may not like this but i feel i must warn you that it is a lethal problem i was told at the time that it can kill some men so be careful and send him to a consultant and get it checked for his sake as well as your own but on the other hand it could be because he is over weight so please get all checks done asap also never wake him but when in the night you will notice him struggle to breath roll him over as this is caused by the nasal passage closing up and he cant wake himself i always find my self awake most nights waiting to do that as for the pig business you will find that if he does suffer with sleep apnoea it will be because although it seems to us like he has had a good sleep he has not so go easy on him he cant help it believe it or not also he could fall asleep any where at any time.

He needs to be seen by a doc. Often times there is a medical cause for snoring so seeing the doc is the first thing he needs to do. If the doc doesn't find a medical cause for the snoring he will be able to tell him what might help.
