It's not that you're proving there are multiple dimensions... You're assuming there are so many and then see what kind of theories makes sense with your assumption. Only certain numbers of dimension actually make sense (so far), so those are the ones studied.

There are 5 different dimensions. The first dimension is just a line, which is length. The second, a square, has length and width. Dimension 3 contains width, height, and length. The fourth contains all of these and time, in which we exist. And finally, the third is all of these mentioned and space. This dimension creates a tesseract, which allows both space and time travel.
