Little women would be good, because it is a study, almost a picture, of the changing roles of women in the US during and after the civil war.

LOTR is LOOOONG...and has been done many many times. Maybe try the Hobbit..more fun and also thought provoking.

What about "A wrinkle in Time." Madaleine Engels. I think.

I've always liked A (or The, not sure) Picture of Dorian Gray. It is not very long and is deep in that it shows how people can really look on the inside while being beautiful on the outside.

1984

Incredible book. As for "deepness" has a lot of allusions to real society and the totalitarian regime that Welles saw to be taking over the world.

Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. You should be able to find a lot of sources for your research and the symbolism is pretty easy to follow.

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Your teacher will be impressed.

"Gone with the Wind" by Margaret Mitchell. It's long, but I love it and it actually has a lot of symbolism and stuff that you'd need for a paper.
