Coastal regions generally have smaller temperature ranges than inland regions. Because water changes temperature very slowly, oceans and seas moderate the temperatures of locations nearby.

The ocean moderates the temperature swings. The water temperature of the ocean has a great influence on the on shore temperatures.

Look at the temperatures of Seattle. The average temperature in Jan is 41.3F. The average temp in July is 65.3F.

Compare that to Spokane WA with an average Jan temp of 27.1F and a July high of 68.8F.

Another example is Baltimore Md with a high of 71 and a low of 31. Kansas City has a average low of 25.7F and a average high of 78.5F

the oceans keep things temperate....less extreme. The further inland you go, the hotter the summers and colder the winters, of course proximity to the equator plays a part.
