basically its a cable for transferring data from something to a Computer. For example, from an external harddrive to a computer. it's similar to the USB cable except firewire transfers data faster.
Here is a website you might want to look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FireWire
I hope this helped

Firewire offers data transfer at speeds of 400 or 800 Mbps
Firewire 400 uses a 4 way or 6 way connector, Firewire 800 uses a 9 way connector, my iMac G3 has a 6 way connector (and USB v1.1 connections). Many PCs only have USB.
(USB v2 is at 480 Mbps, and USB v1.1 is either 1.5 Mbps or 12 Mbps)
Seems that (like some other things concerning Apple) the cost when it came out stopped it from becoming the widest used standard (USB was a bit cheaper, so was used for lots of items, where an extra $1 or $2 seems to have made Firewire less popular!)
Lots of information on Wikipedia. (OK not always 100% correct, but the notes and diagrams on there are fine for USB and Firewire, so far as I can tell).

Firewire is a standard that describes the way that firewire hardware moves data. It is just like USB 1.0 or 2.0. They describe how data moves along a USB connection. So, a Firewire port will only interact with Firewire enabled devices that are connected via a Firewire enable port.

Firewire is a high-speed method of transferring data by cables. Firewire 400 is several times faster than USB 2.0 and Firewire 800 is faster than Firewire 400.

Believe that Apple has the rights to 'firewire' but it is also know as the ieee 1394 port or I-link. It is highspeed and until usb2 came along was the fastest way to download video and other info from peripherals like video cams. A IEEE 1394 port is usually not that expensive to buy.
Peace
