I have mixed feelings about being on the board.If I resign after
a few months will I be free of liabilities caused by negligence
of the board after I leave?

The board? What board? Is this private or government? It makes a difference.

If the board is negligent after you leave, you are not liable. If the board was negligent while you were a member, leaving does not get you off the hook. If you can show the negligence of the board was something you tried to fix, but were prevented by the rest of the board., you could use that as a defense against personal liability. I don't know if that defense would hold up in court, but I would try if it applied.

once you resign and the board accepts that resignation in writing. You can no longer be held libel for the boards actions. You will however remain responsible for actions taken while on the board especially actions that you could have acted on

Nope. You are liable for all decisions and the consequences of those decisions while you were in office.
