These are all good choices and are rated PG-13. Hope this helps you!!

Jaws, 1975, rated PG-13. This classic—which pits man against shark, mankind against nature, and old-salt wisdom against new-fangled technology—isn't usually associated with Halloween. But Rhonda of Georgia thinks it would work, and so do we. "For children over 13 or for a very mature 12-year-old," she says, "it's good and scary all the way through. I was 12 when I saw this movie. I remember my mother was scared during the opening credits!"

Lady in White, 1988, rated PG-13. C.J. of California writes, "My kids keep asking me to rent this movie [in which a young boy witnesses the murder of a girl killed years earlier. He's soon drawn to an old house inhabited by the mysterious Lady in White]. It's set in the early '60s and has a realistic storyline, which makes it believable to grown-ups and a great scary movie for kids."

The Mummy, 1999, rated PG-13. During an archeological dig of an ancient Egyptian tomb, a mummy is accidentally resurrected. Brendan Fraser, playing an American adventurer, must scramble to stop the crazed mummy before he wreaks too much havoc. "My kids are old enough that we can all enjoy this film together," says Zonda of Indiana.

So I Married an Ax Murderer, 1993, rated PG-13. This dark comedy stars Mike Myers as a San Francisco poet who suspects his new girlfriend may be a serial husband-killer. "It's a lot of fun to watch this with your kids," says Debbie of New Jersey. "Mike Myers is hilarious! It's more comedy than scary."

The Watcher in the Woods, 1980, rated PG. Suspense and subtle terror can be more effective than the most violent gore, as proved by this Disney movie about an American family that moves into a haunted house in Britain. Cassandra of Utah writes, "I think that this film is a classic, but it may a bit too frightening for children under 8 or 9."

Beetlejuice, 1988, rated PG. Amber of Nebraska lists this film as one "I would watch with my daughter." Indeed, the hilarious, twisted Tim Burton movie, about a young couple (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) whose untimely deaths force them to haunt the new occupants of their house, is family-friendly, despite its macabre moments and spooky plot.

Casper, 1995, rated PG. Debbie of California likes this movie about the famed friendly ghost because it "has a sense of humor, and it's not too scary for wee ones." In it, a young girl (Christina Ricci), who's reluctantly moved in to an old house with her father, befriends Casper, the boy-ghost who's been haunting the place since his death so many years ago.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, 1966, not rated. Michele of California highly recommends this one. "It stars Don Knotts as a would-be reporter doing a story about a murder." He has to spend the night in a supposedly haunted house where the murder took place. "It's a night filled with a lot of humor, as well as fright. It's perfectly suitable for all ages."

The Goonies, 1985, rated PG. A motley pack of kids go on a treasure hunt in an effort to save their homes from destruction due to a new real estate development. Traci of New York says: "While there are a lot of really good scary movies out there, there aren't many I would recommend for kids. It's not only scary, but very funny as well—and it won't give children nightmares."

Gremlins, 1984, rated PG. C.J. of California recommends this kids' thriller, which unleashes a pack of mean, havoc-wreaking creatures on an unprepared small town. "It's very noisy, busy, and messy, but its fast pace keeps the kids interested. The slower scenes are very touching."

The Nightmare Before Christmas, 1993, rated PG. In Tim Burton's whirlwind animated fantasy, Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloweentown, stumbles upon Christmastown and promptly falls in love with snow, gingerbread, and all the trappings of the more wholesome holiday—so much so that he hatches a wrong-minded plan to overtake it! Michelle of California says, "This movie is not too scary and has wonderful music." (Not to mention visual effects: It was nominated for an Academy Award in that category.)
