I know the question sounds a little naive. But in my case my engine broke, and yes the mechanic told me that there was no water in the radiator, BUT the heat indicator never signaled that the engine was hot.

I just want to make sure that my engine collapsed because I bought a used engine? Or, because there was no water in the radiator? And I don't remember ever putting any water to the radiator because it never indicated overheating.

I have to decide if I get a re-built engine or used like before. Nevertheless from now on, I'll make sure I put water every two weeks if necessary.

I appreciate your help and expertise in the subject.

The engine lasted me about 10 months. And maybe the car ran without water for many months. Do you think the engine would of lasted longer if water wasn't the issue?

With absolutely NO water in the engine, it may well not indicate overheating because there is nothing there in contact with the sensor. And you really should check all fluids, which would include water, at least once a week, you don't forget the coolant unless and until you get a 'hot' indication.

But yes, driving it with no coolant would ruin the engine in a very short time.

First, your engine will cease without coolant/water. Second, if all the coolant leaked out or burned off, there is something wrong with your radiator/coolant system. Third, you may not have had any indication of overheating because your thermostat could be frozen. I would replace that for sure or take it out so your engine is cooling all the time. Be careful when you buy a rebuilt engine, make sure you are getting it from a very reliable source. I don't know what kind of car you have so this is pretty general. Good luck.

The sensor that lets you know the engine temp is actually reading the temp of the coolant. If there is no coolant touching the sensor, it usually reads cold to warm from the ambient air temperature inside the water jacket, even as the engine cooks its gaskets and melts the seals.

Always check the coolant level on a regular basis - or install a coolant level sensor, so you are warned if your level drops too low.
