I think the answer written by curious 7 is about right. Try your best to return it if you can.You don't know about the person that lost the money and they may really need it. If nobody claims it then it was yours to keep. If they do then you will feel better for having returned it. Take care : )

Try to find the rightful owner. The money doesn't belong to you, and if you keep it, it would be the same as stealing it from them.
Put yourself in the reverse situation.....lets say that YOU lost that money, and maybe it was for your groceries for the week. How would you feel,...probably a little sick.
You can put a "lost and found" ad in the paper, (they are usually free), but don't put in the ad the amount of the money, or the location on where you found it. That way, the rightful owner might see the ad, and contact you, and you could ask them, "How much did you lose.??" Then, if they said, "$68", you know they are the owner.
You can also check with all the banks in your town, and ask them if anyone reported losing any of their money. It would be OK to tell the bank person the correct amount, that way, if the owner came in and said they lost $68, the bank people would know that they were the owner, and get in touch with you.
After a week or ten days, if no one claims it, then it would be your money.
If you find the right owner, you will feel a lot better, with a clear mind, that you did the right thing.

It depends on where you found it...was it in a wallet? was it in front of a business or a house? If it was in front of a place such as this, I would go in, tell the receptionist/resident that you found some money. Don't say where, don't say how much or in what denominations (fives, tens, etc.). If they can identify it, give it to them. If not, leave your name and number, say you will hold it for 2 weeks and if no one claims it, it should be yours. Sounds fair to everyone and about all you could be expected to do.

Don't turn it into the police, they will probably keep it. I know the cops around here will. Post a bulletin where you found it, stating that you found some money, and list the area where you found it, but don't list the amount. wait 1 month and if no one claims it, it's yours.

Depends on the situation, if it was found in a
wallet, then I would try and get ahold of the owner
and let he or she know, if it was just lying in the
street all alone then I would use is for whatever
and if I found it all alone and saw someone in the
street that needed help I would give them half.

YOU FOUND IT ON THE STREET IS YOURS, BUT WHAT WOULD MAKE IT EVEN BETTER FOR YOU IS TO BUY SOME FOOD AND GIVE IT TO THE HOMELESS. REMEMBER THEY DONT EAT EVERYDAY LIKE YOU AND ME. SO YOU COULD GO TO MCDONALDS AND BUY LOTS OF THE $1 VALUE AND TAKE IT TO A SHELTER. SO EVERYONE CAN EAT.

Try to find the owner. Turn it in to the police station so they can find the owner, or donate it to a god charity.
