a term paper is "a long essay, report, or the like, written by a student as an assignment over the course of a term or semester."
what will happen is, your professor will have you write the paper in a specific manner. they SHOULD supply you with specific guidelines as to topics and set-up.
my professors usually like Chicago style set-up. with modern art, they like at least 1 primary source (meaning it came directly from the artist-like a quote or something) and at least 4 other secondary sources. usually they are 7-15 pages for undergraduates depending upon the professor. what they like you to do is to use theory or criticisms to argue or prove a point in relation to an artist in the time you are studying. now, it all varies according to the professor, but this is what i have experienced.

Try to make it as creative as possible; if you're given the opportunity to choose your own, take advantage of this. Choose something you're particularly interested in because this will make it easier to write; in particular, try to select the topic as a result of pressing questions you already know you want to search for answers to. Once you've decided on a topic, be sure to hone down it to a do-able topic; often a topic is initially too broad in its coverage, which will make it impossible to complete within the time and space constraints given.
