Assuming it's a cast iron pan, you still can "season" it. Wash it in hot soapy water, then dry it. Melt some crisco in the pan, and use a paper towel to spread the melted shortening on ALL surfaces of the pan. Put it in the oven with the bottom of the pan facing up (i do mine at 400 degrees) for about an hour, turn off the oven, and leave the pan in there until it cools completely.(Be sure to spread some foil on the rack below the pan to catch drips.) After you season your pan, try to only use water to wash it, and only use soap if you really need to and don't use a scouring pad. If you notice that after time your pan gets a dull appearance, has spots of rust, or if food starts sticking to it more and more, just repeat the whole process.

the best thing to do with new frying pan´s before you use them is. Put the frying pan on the heat with a good helping of salt , leave it like this with the heat on a low gas/electric for 5 min´s . This will take away that new smell they all have, don´t worry about the pan going on fire or the salt burning because it won´t . Then throw away the salt and your pan is ready to use .

No. Grease it and put it in the oven. That is if your talking about an iron skillet. Never wash an iron skillet with soap, only water and dry it on the stove or by hand and grease it each time you wash it but you do not have to put it in the oven each time , only once.

KAREN P Has the best answer....also remember that you should not cook any tomato based food in a cast iron skillet or else you have to season it all over again

You have to "season" the pan first it gives it a sort of coating .
