A harp seal reaches adulthood when it reaches sexual maturity. For males this happens between 4 and 5 years. A female reaches sexual maturity at 6 to 7 years old. They will live to be 30-35 years old providing they are not taken as prey by humans or other animals. At maturity, a male harp seal is about 6.5 feet long and weighs almost 300 pounds. A female harp seal is slightly smaller than a male. A harp seal, now as an adult, will have a grey fur coat with black markings across its back that has the shape of a harp. This is where they get their name. Even though a harp seal has reached adulthood, it still has the same diet as a Bedlamer harp seal. Life is much the same as it was as a Bedlamer except now the seals will be involved in the breeding cycle. This is simple for the male seals. About 10 days after the females give birth, they will leave their pups to mate with the males. The males are very promiscuous during this time, mating with as many females as possible. An adult female harp seal will give birth to one pup per year in late February, early March. They will nurse their pup for 12 days. They will mate at the end of the nursing period and will not return to the pup. After the egg is fertilized, the implantation is delayed for 4 to 5 months, with total gestation being eleven and a half months. This cycle repeats each year.
