In many cases the average-velocity-versus-time graph does not pass trough zero. What are some reasons?

If you mean a "velocity versus time" graph then the object was never moving in a negative direction, and it never completely stopped. Average velocity is obtained by averaging all the velocities, or dividing displacement by total time, but you don't graph average velocity.
