The US attempted to annex the Philippines. Under McKinley's "benevolent assimilation" doctrine, the US fought a war against Philippine resistance for four years following the Spanish American war. The simple fact that "benevolent" and "war" appear in the same sentence should tell you something. At the end of the war, the Philippines was restructured as a US dependency. Colonial rule was never entirely sucessful, and the nation transitioned to commonwealth status in the 30's. l It wasn't until after WWII that the Philippines gained it's independence.
