My daughter did this for her science experiment but I can't find any supporting information to put on her board. Is this sort of thing used in everyday life?. Maybe a website link?

The principle is used on any TV or audio remote control. The information on the light beam in these is digital, rather than sound, but the principle is the same.

On the display of any audio equipment perhaps, or it might be useful in equipment for deaf people.
