Because it takes away farm jobs and gives it to "machines"

Previously you could employ 1000 pickers and now you just need one guy running an automated picker.

Now you have 999 unemployed folks.

I sincerely hope this is not an economics class.

Automation means fewer farm jobs. That is NOT a farm problem. That is human advancement. Those machines did design and build themselves..

40 years ago, my mother was a telephone operator. When someone called, she literally unplugged the cord and replugged it into a new socket so people could speak to each other. Automation has stopped that and telephone operators lost their jobs.
Is that a telephone problem? Who on planet earth would rather speak to an operator every time they picked up the phone instead of just dialing.

Farm automation increases productivity by reducing the demand for human labor as a percentage of cost. It also however increases the dependence on the maintenance of that productivity level on fuel and energy costs. Thus subjecting the maintenance of that productivity level, cost structure and associated cost benefits on the cost of that energy/fuel.

Corperate farming tends to destroy mom & pop farms because small farms cannot compete with large farms. Large farms tend to hurt the environment around them due to huge amounts of cows polluting ground water and releasing large amounts of methaine into the air
