Editors estimate 200 - 250 words per page. The average novel today runs about 100 - 140 thousand words. But the real answer is - however long it takes you to tell the story is how long the book should be. Also figure that if it makes it into the publishing world, expect it to be sent to an editor and expect that editor to suggest and make significant cuts. Just work on the writing - dont worry about the length. When it's done, you will know it. C.

A lot of it depends on your target audience. Children's books are often 20-50 pages but you can have more if you're aiming for more advanced readers. I've seen more adult-level books at as little as 150 pages or as many as 1000+. Depends on how many it takes to tell your story.

It depends on the genre. It's usually smaller word/page count for children's/young adult books. For adult fiction you typically shoot for 100,000 words or 350-400 pages (that's in manuscript format which is Courier or Times New Roman 12pt, double spaced with one inch margins.)

But you shouldn't even be focusing on the word/page count. A true writer WRITES THE STORY and knows when s/he has reached the end and it's NOT based on page count.

Buy a current copy of Writer's Market available in any decent book store. Each publisher has different word count/page count guidelines for books they are interested in. There are also TONS of books written by industry professionals describing how to properly format a book and the desired word /page counts.

As my sixth grade teacher says "How ever long it takes you to be intellegent and tell the story." Basically, if you think 50 pages is short, but it's a great story and there is absolutely no way to make your story even better, then it's long enough.

I hope this helps!
