I saw this on the show mythbusters. They drove a big SUV, with all the windows down, and the sunroof open, against the same SUV with the A/C on. It takes much less fuel to drive with all windows down, I think they got like 30 more laps (on a race car track), which is quite a long way. I would imagine the results would be the same for a convertible.

Top down uses more gas, unless you're driving below 25 mph. Aerodynamics make a vast difference, whereas a/c doesn't use all that much power these days.

If I could buy a convertible I would take the
top down and run the a/c.
