I applaude you for accepting a role in your school's play. I know many young men who would not think of even playing tree, let alone, a major role. You have not only your lines to learn, but your other assignments and teachers to deal with. Great. Now -as far as your question - it goes with the territory. Whatever you are required to wear as your role provides - that's what you have to do. I do not think there is anything 'gay' about it. As an actor, you might be asked to go even beyond that - but you still have a choice. There are some limits to what you may feel uncomfortable doing - and you'll know it. Good luck to you in the play - and do your best to manage your time, effort, energy and SLEEP so that you can get it all done. (I teach at an arts magnet middle school and though our students are very heavy into the band, strings, chorus, art, drama, theater, etc. I still require they complete all my ENGLISH and other academic assignments....) You will need to make sure you are taking care of yourself.

I really don't think it is, for several reasons:
1) In Shakespeare's time, all men, gay or not, wore tights. (They were called hose or trous at that point.) So it's just a costume.
2) If you are secure enough in your own masculinity, and not homophobic yourself, you will let a$$hole comments from your classmates about your tights roll off your back, and know that your tights make your legs look good. You wouldn't have been chosen to play Romeo if you didn't fit the part, so know that you are talented and that you were chosen for a reason.

So, good luck, and as they say in theater, break a leg!

Question is... does it matter? Do you want to play Romeo in the play? Yes. Does to play require Romeo to wear tights? Yes. Ergo, ipso facto, you have to wear tights to have that part in the play.
Besides, it's 2007, anyone who gives you beef about appearing "gay" in a Shakespearean play probably has some 'closet' issues themselves. Don't sweat the small stuff man!

I am a talent scout for toospoiled.com, an international talent agency, and would love to have you signed up on our site. We cater to actors, models, dancers, and comics, and are branching out in the next few months to musicians and child talent as well. I have worked for internet sites before and will not waste my time on one that is ineffective. Joining is free and can be done during a commercial break, so no great investment is needed to join and start exploring the talent industry.
You have nothing but a few seconds to lose and everything to gain. All you need to do is log onto toospoiled.com (works best with internet explorer), enter my scout code STPE8759, and fill in the forms. It can be used as just a social site like MySpace and you can get paid for the ads on your page.

If anyone give you a hard time for following your director's request, tell them you are aligned with a talent agency and need the positive experience to break into the business.

Absolutely NOT! My high school just did Once Upon A Mattress as our spring musical and all the guys where in brightly colored tights. Not one of them felt uncomfortable wearing them on stage and I know for a fact I wasn't the only girl who found it totally HOT!

Did you know that in Shakespear's time men or boys played all roles including women. Full make up and dresses. It was considered un becoming for a women to perfrom in public. So unless your going to go to the rap party in tights no it is not un manly

Sounds like a fake question. If you were in theater, the last thing you would be worried about is whether your costume for a Shakespeare play reflects your sexual orientation.

No, i actually think that guys who wear tights in plays are hot. But it goes with the play and it was what they used to wear.

No way!
I am a dancer.
Guys wear Tights all the time when they dance, and as long as it is for the play...
Knock yourself out.
