9 BILLION! for 2 weeks, this money has come from lottery grants, the government promises to pay it back.9 billion will not be the final cost, theres all the security too and other knock on costs. The money used deprives the other charities and needy people from getting it as it has gone to olympics.
Utter waste, and some of you will say, its sport and will bring money to uk, and will regenerate a poor area of london, well,9 billion would have done that without all the hassle of the olympic farce that lasts for just 2 weeks, haha..so will you still support this decision and buy lottery tickets again? or are we all as greedy as those whose pockets are lined from profiting from olympics or do our morals have meaning and will we stand by them?I will never buy a lottery ticket again myself, while decisions to give this money to unworthy causes continues.

The problem isn't so much the lottery but rather the government. The lottery fund seems to be used as a piggy bank by the government whereby whenever they have a shortfall on an expensive project they feel they can just dip into it. They don't show any compassion for the smaller projects which will lose funding as a result, in this case educational and community funding is suffering including reading clubs for children and sports clubs (ironic that one).

Similar behaviour can be seen with the Millenium Dome which was an absolute travesty and cost an absolute fortune in lottery finding (but a drop in the ocean compared to the Olympics). Those in charge of the lottery fund are not happy either as on a recent interview the bloke in charge decried the way the fund was being treated.

So wait a minute...You're saying that the international Olympics is not a worthy cause for spending the 50% the lottery rips out of your butt when you win a jackpot. I could think of several hundred worse things that money could go to. When it all comes down to it...the Olympics is probably one of the worlds most worthy causes for any money to go to. I know that since I was old enough to remember there wasn't an Olympics I didn't watch. And you know what...for the most part the Olympics is one of the few international events that actually causes peace around the world. everyone stops their fighting and bickering for two weeks and actually uses their money and energy in a positive and constructive direction. Name any other organization or even that has ever done that, let alone on a consistent basis of every two years. As for the lottery on its own merrit, what's wrong with profiting by any legal means, money isn't evil nor is profit, and certainly if I were to win a jackpot, and know that immediatly they were taking 50% of my winnings, I know I would feel a lot happier if I knew that the money was going to such a world peace creating cause.

Hang on. You complain about wasting money AND tell us you buy lottery tickets! If you were that bothered about good causes you would donate the money to them directly. In reality you are motivated by greed, so you can hardly take the moral high ground.

This way to the thumbs down button -->

1. I don't buy lottery tickets anyway.
2. Those that do, it is for the prize money, not the "charity".
3. If you insist on gambling, better odds on football pools.
