Does anyone know approximately what the square footage was of a castle in the middle ages?

I cannot answer your question, because there are two answers. One "castle" on the Rhine in Germany would actually be called a "burg" (fort). One visits "die Burgen am Rhine." Another "castle" is "das Schloss," which means a palace or a fortress. The square footage could differ greatly between the two.
