When I substituted for a pre-K class for a week, we played role playing like Simon Sez "act scared", "act happy", "act surprised", "act like your thinking", "act curious", etc.

Kids that age are still learning their own emotions. You would be surprised how many kids still think it is funny or "happy" to make another kid cry. And a big reason is because the kids have not learned the social manners or social interactions and emotions.

One "cruel" experiment on a kid that has not learned about pain, is if that kid bumps his head, you start laughing, and the kid will be confused on how he should act. He wants to cry, but he thinks the proper emotional response is to laugh because he sees you do it.

Any exercise of emotion at the Pre-K to K age helps their social interaction and growth.

Have them all act out a common scene, playing an uncommon role. For example; let them be the bacon in a frying pan. Your job is to then walk them through each step (i.e. I'm turning up the heat, so you're getting hotter!).

Drama is also great for retelling a story they have just heard. Costumes and props really help.

For really young learners, just give them some costumes and props and see what they do all on their own. They are so imaginative at that age!

Play outside or in a large gym freeze tag. One person is "it". They run around tagging other students. Once the student is tagged, they have to freeze in the position they were in when tagged. The other student run about unfreezing them (some have to touch shoulders for 5 sec, others have them dive under legs, depends on your school and the students you have. Once done bring the students into class and ask them to repose one of the favorate ways they were frozen. Ask them what face they had on, what emotion they were showing. you can alter this for higher grades and lower. Also you could have them pretend to be everyday house hold objects and give them feelings. For example the fridge is always cold and sluggish. For older children have them write about it or put them in pairs to make a small play for it. It all depends on the time you have for your lesson and the grade.
