Hey Mr. S,

I use to think so. But a philosophy degree is earned by learning to learn and loving it. Many top executives in the world appreciate the philosophy degree as a leader.

So, Take that to the bank. Here are 2 sites that make the point that you are required to use your mind with Philosophy, a highly praised and sought after skill.

It depends on the university you're attending (pedigree matters), and what you want to do after. You could teach at the community college level, but that usually doesn't pay so well if you're only an adjunct instructor or lecturer, i.e., non-tenure-track, and esp. if it's just part-time; you would need a "day job" still.

But if you leave higher education, then you could apply your training to more profitable areas. Law is the obvious field, but also look at business. The CEO of Overstock.com, for instance, has a philosophy PhD from Stanford, so presumably the ability to think analytically (strategically) and write convincingly are valuable skills in business.

You could also use your degree to build credibility as an author, whether it's writing books or as a journalist or freelancer writer, etc. Start your own website.

There are many, many things you can do with a philosophy degree. But for teaching philosophy to be a viable option, you may need a PhD...
