I am wondering:
1 When is the time to visit the area to see the apple trees in bloom?
2 What kind of apples do they grow?
3 Do they grow a lot of heirloom apples now?
4 What are the most popular apples?
5 When is apple picking time?
6 Are there orchards where the public is welcome to pick apples themselves?
7 What other things are there to do in the area, so a day trip could include a couple of nice activities ...... like picking apples and something else to complement it?
8 Is there a boat trip on the Hudson that makes stops at various points, like the apple growing areas, etc.
9 Since there is a small bird perched on my shoulder asking this question, may I ask if there are any summer jobs available for the strong, hearty, healthy and willing? Thank you!!!

Thanks much

Historically, the Hudson Valley has supplied fruit of all kinds to the big cities downstream. They still do so today. Here is a link to a terrific website that will answer most of your questions:

http://www.nyapplecountry.com/history.htm

Additional information can be found by doing a Yahoo search for "hudson valley orchards" (include the quotation marks in the Yahoo search box) and exploring the results. Individual orchards post picking times as well as ripening schedules on their websites. You will find all kinds of usefull information.

Good luck with your search for informaton.

I don't have the answer to all of your questions, but I'll hit the ones I do know:

#2 - Tons of different varieties are grown there, you name it, they probably grow it.

#3 - Some orchards specialize in heirlooms.

#5 - Apple picking time is in the fall, late September to mid-October depending on the summer and the variety of apple.

#6 - Yes.

#7 - The fall is great in the Great Lakes, during apple picking time the leaves will be turning, grapes will be harvested and there are all kinds of things you could incorporate into a day trip.
