I have been loosing my mucus plug for months because I went into early labor. I am fine now if she was born but I was wondering if you could tell if you had dialated more by how big the mucus plug was because this time it didn't look just like a peice of it. I would normally call my doctor but it's a Sunday. So does a bigger (or full) mucus plug mean maybe I've dialated more?

Because of your history of preterm labor, your situation is somewhat different from others in that you've lost some/most of the mucous plug over a period of time. It's good to know that, you're far enough along that if you go into labor now, you'll be allowed to deliver. That is truly good news! For many women, it is not uncommon to lose the mucous plug a week or two prior to going into labor. In other words, it doesn't necessarily mean labor is imminent. Often, patients find that theirs becomes dislodged @ an ob check when their cervix is examined for dilatation. What you are looking for are the general signs of labor that you've been instructed to observe--gush or leak of fluid from the vagina that doesn't smell like urine, regular contractions every 5-6 minutes for an hour or more. Of course you also know to call if there is any vaginal bleeding or if there is decreased fetal movement. Best wishes. You're closer than ever to meeting your little darling face to face!

All I can tell you is that I had clear mucus for ten days then I lost my mucus plug 5 hours before I went into labor, it was green and had blood in it. It wasn't very big and I was fully dialated but it might be different for everybody.

Go to your doctor and check in. Just call the hospital and be on the safe side, your baby's health is worth more than a tiny bit of embarassment if your wrong.

I don't think you need to call the doctor unless you start losing water.
