If someone is always really nice, and seems to be a genuinely good person, how is it possible to tell whether they're really like that, or actually hypocrites? Or am I just being cynical?

A popular African saying goes like " Habits and attitudes are like pregnancies, they can never be hidden." No matter how much someone may pretend,his/her true "colors" will definitely come out .It could come out be accident.Hypocrites can never contain being pretenders for ever,so they definitely sneak out of their shells.
However, there are very nice people that never change just like some bad people never change. They stand for their beliefs no matter what.Yes indeed, there are very nice people in our today's world and there are very awful people too.

I would say the way to tell is if your with this person often enough to see if they go against their own rules...like if they say "i would never do that"..and then they do but pass it off as no big deal or use an excuse, thats a way of being such a hypocrite.. i know someone like that...it;s as if they expect others to follow their rules, but not themselves.

I think your really looking to ask , how can you tell if a person is false, perhaps? Just thought so because you kinda of want to know if a person is being their true self, the only way you can find this out is by getting to know the person and being with them long enough to see how they handle situations... a "really nice and genuinely good person" could be an angry, had to deal with person in a bad situation.

I always find unless you live with someone or have at some stage you never truely no them.

Sometimes you are just being cynical, but with the way today is, you wonder if there are truly nice people. There are really kind and sweet people who are genuine, & its those people that I give my highest praise for. Hypocrites are people who are two-faced & put up an image, usually one can tell if they are being fake or not; such as lack of eye contact, tone of voice (if they sound "too nice", you'll know....), things like that. But don't be so hard on everybody though, sometimes being nice is the way to go. Good for your karma.

For one thing, it is a politicians method of operation to tell the public what they want to hear to get elected. It doesn't matter what party they belong to you will hear empty rhetoric to draw you to the polls. And for another thing, just like Bush senior said, "Read my lips, no new taxes!", things *do* change from a different perspective that is gained while in office and time changes the approach one has to take for a solution to a problem. To say one is hypocritical is just being short sighted and not seeing the bigger picture. Flip flopping is the common character trait of ALL politicians. Show me a politician and I'll show you someone that is a flip flopper.

I agree, time will tell if someone is really nice, or if they are just trying to be nice because they don't want to upset people, or if they are just two-faced jerks.

Once I found this place that taught you the facial differences between a real smile and a fake smile, but I don't remember where, sorry :/ But it's an idea to search for!!

Everyone is hypocritical to a degree.

Parents of teens go mad at them for having sex or drinking or smoking when they did the same at the same age etc.

possibly it does not really matter if they are or not unless it has an effect on your life. It is themselves who are living a lie and have possible feelings of inadequacy. They need pity for not being able to live the truth or feeling that living their truth is not important enough.
