They are both ball games so why are the fields different shapes. why is a tennis field not circular or why is a baseball field not square?

Tennis and football is played forward and backwards only, baseball is played around the field, the ball can be hit in any direction.

I'm with Tucksie. If you think about cricket, the play radiates from the centre so a round-ish pitch makes sense.
Football, rugby and tennis are end-to-end games, hence a rectangular pitch.
Having said that, can any Aussies out there confirm that Aussie rules football is played on a round pitch? Or do they make use of cricket pitches out of season?

If football pitches were circular then you wouldn't be able to take corners.

To be different from Aussie Rules, which has an oval.
