I'm supposed to write an alternative ending to "Lady with a lapdog", by Chekhov, using the events of the time as a backdrop. So, I'm interested in social scene in Russia, 1889. Would divorce and remarriage be possible? How hard? what was the political and historical background? Anything that could help me will be greatly appreciated.

Russian divorce law was quite rigid though divorce was possible. Oddly, Russian Jews had relatively high rates of divorce.

Divorce was possible, but relatively hard to get. Remarriage was not possible.
