Why does bruising seem to spread from the original site of injury? I had brain surgery 2 years ago and ended up with bruising right down my cheeks. Last week I had a bunion removed (and toe broken to reset I think), but the bruising extends all the way back to my heel. Why does this happen?

Bruising is caused by bleeding under the skin. It can be more severe dependent on whether you took medication such as aspirin or containing aspirin prior to your operation. products containing asprin reduce the clotting mechanism of blood, so you will get a greater degree of bruising. Pain from bruising is usually due to the pressure of the blood under the skin. There is very little that one can do about it, other than to keep the limb elevated and apply a cold compress. The body will eventually absorb the blood into the surrounding tissue (which accounts for the change in color from blue and red to green and yellow)
Hope this answers your question.

Ecchymosis, or bruising, can result from any type of surgical procedure. It results from damage to little blood vessels that run under the skin surface. Sometimes the bruising can spread along tissue planes and occur distant from the actual surgery site.

Because blood spreads & pools, just like it does when you get cut; it can flow through the body outside of a vein just as easily as it does while INSIDE of one. When a blood vessel breaks, blood flows out of it, creating the "bruise" we see under the skin. If enough blood is let out, the blood will spread as gravilty & your body movements dictate. Hope this helped!
